We went to the cinema for the second time this year, to see Stardust. It was entertaining fluff of the highest order and very enjoyable to go with it.

It was good to see my friend [livejournal.com profile] shanks01 portrayed by an actor as serious as Robert De Niro.

Also the trailer for The Golden Compass gave me hope- Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast, and Christopher Lee belongs in the Magisterum, although the daemons were a little bit CGI looking. I think it will be worth seeing, though. Well worth seeing.

Oh, I wanted to see Stardust so badly but we didn't get the chance to go to the theater. It looked so...*pretty.*

I'm excited about The Golden Compass too. I think it's supposed to come out around the holidays, and Husband and I are planning to take the kids. (We don't often go, so it's a bit of a treat when we do.)

The Phillip Pullman ones are a tough call to make into a film because the books are so amazing, I really hope they pull it off, though.

Did you like Stardust? My fiance is a huge Neil Gaimon fan and loved the Sandman Series, and Stardust...was worried the movie would kill how much he loved the graphic novel itself by not following the storyline.

Not having read the original I was quite happy to let it be itself as a movie and it worked very well in that context.

I like everything by Neil Gaiman that I've read but I've not read everything by him yet.

Ask your fiance if he's as annoyed as I am that Neil Gaiman's name was never once mentioned in any of newspaper articles/magazine articles/talkshows/general hype regarding the film. :P
Unless that's just a UK thing?

I didn't notice that, but then the only hype for the film I saw was on his blog (http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/) and it's pretty hard to miss his influence there.

We saw it the other week, it's probably the most entertaining film I've seen in a long time.

Oh, and yes, I agree with the portrayal of shanks.

I mean "Shakespeare" is only a step away in name. Made all the stuff on the skyboat fantastically funny.

AAAAAAARGHHHHH *flails*

I apologise. I adore His Dark Materials triology (I presume you've read it yourself?), and it annoys me SO very much that they changed the name of the film/first book. Wtf?? Do Americans not know what Northern Lights are? Are the Northern Lights not the entire point of the first book? WHY MUST THEY DO THAT.

On a brighter note, Iorek looks as amazing as I'd imagined. <3

You see it doesn't bother me because the american name actually ties in with the titles of the other two books in the trilogy as they are all things. The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass- when you can see them all in a row it is entirely logical, more so than Northern Lights.

Annoys me far less than Harry Potter and the Sorcerors Stone. The what now? The Sorceror's Stone is nothing, the Philosopher's Stone is the objective of all alchemy. Why do they have to assume everyone in america is totally ignorant? The people I've met there do nothing to confirm this.
