It snowed in October for the first time in my life. That was pretty chilly.

The cold snap persists and when we got home from ponies last night it turned out our corner of town had no electricity. By the morning most of the area had it, but our street was still dark. We're lucky that we have lots of candles around and we cook off gas, but its anxious in terms of tropical fish - 18 hours of power loss is not going to do them any good. Good job we go the house insulated and the windows replaced last year though, we would have been intolerably cold if it wasn't for that...

We're always ok when we lose power because we have the foal watch kit which means generator, camping stoves, lights that run off a car battery, Calorgas heater and of course gas cooker at home anyway. When they cut off the power for maintenance the other month we were ready to hook the heater and generator for the little old lady 2 doors away.

being in a rented house, if the heating doesn't work, we freeze. Happened the year before last - I ended up making a little blanket tent to go over the hamsters' cage so it wouldn't get too cold for them. In the mean time we humans just wore all the jumpers

I hope that doesn't happen again this year :(

I think you're with in your rights to break up the landlord's furniture for fuel if that happens...

In Canada, we put up a layer of see-through plastic shrink-wrap sheeting over the windows so that more heat stays in. Also we get squeezy tube guns full of temporary sealant gack and use that as well.

Consider looking down your local DIY store for these things.

Well it's not such a problem now on account of having almost new and fairly high-rated double-glazing and cavity walls, although we need to fill the attic with more fluff, no question.

We were using that when we had the single glazing and I was working from home, though. That was teh sux.

I love losing power!! We have lots and lots of candles, and Paul of course has rigged his palm pilot to play old radio shows from the '50's through his old-timey-radio-reproduction thingy...and the whole thing runs off of batteries.

Its gotten cold enough that we've had to leave all 4 stove burners on for about half an hour, and it wasn't for cooking purposes. Probably not the cheapest way to heat your house, but it has gotten us through some pretty intense storms...

We've had just the reverse experience...it recently snowed everywhere *but* here. Odd...

I think if I were somewhere colder than this it would be pretty handy to have a woodstove really. Actually, it would be handy here too, but we cant afford to get the chimney sorted out or we would have one already...
