We just watched The Golden Compass. If I had been expecting something even remotely close to the greatness of the book, I would have been deeply disappointed by it but having heard everyone and their dog totally wail on it for the last few weeks I was expecting it to be terrible and it wasn't. I felt the cast were great, doing the best they could with a script that had been watered down horribly for fear of offending some Americans.

Much like the books, Lee Scoresby was awesome. Rather than trying the impossible task of watering down the sequels they should totally just do a "Lee Scoresby's Aeronautical Adventures" type prequel.

Lee Scoresby's Aeronautical Adventures = YES! That would be fantastic!

I agree - as long as you don't expect anything as involved or with the same depth as the book, it's an alright film. I was happy with how they did the daemons. Lee was fantastic, and so was Hester! She had just the right amount of sass to her. I was disappointed that they changed the ending to a happy ending (what, five, ten minutes before the 'sacrifice'?). Either way, it led to an expectation of more.

Do you know if they're going to do the other books?

I think The Golden Compass was kind of trialing whether it could work I don't know how they could water down the sequels so I don't think necessarily they'll get made, which is a shame because I thought visually it was very well done and I can imagine some of the later stuff being amazing. But they can't get away from the fact it's an extended gyre on Paradise Lost forever - which I don't think will make any difference to the audience but hollywood is so utterly cringingly cowardly that I doubt anything can be done with it.

You probably went in with the right attitude tbh. On its own it's actually a damn good film, I just happen to be completely in love with the books and got very very annoyed at them about the ending.

But you should start a petition to get the prequel happening! Brilliant idea!

I quite enjoyed the film. I've read the books, some time before the movie came out, and I couldn't remember everything from them, so I think I wasn't as concerned about book accuracy.

I really can't see what some people were whining about with regards to the anti-organised-religion aspect. It barely has a presence at all in the movie. No, wait, I *can* see.. they didn't watch it in the first place and assumed it would be exactly the same as the books.. which they hadn't read either.

It's like they had to sneak as much of it in through the side doors of set design, costume and soon because they couldn't have it in the script. Lots of references but nothing direct.

I guess they're assuming that if people who object to that kind of thing do go and see it they'll probably be stupid, which is a fair bet.

I thought the visuals and the technology were great, though - very reminiscent of some of the Final Fantasy games.
