New trainers for pony
25 June 2006 20:50On Saturday the Old Mac boots our trimmer recommended for Othello's front feet arrived from the very helpful tack shop who had got them in stock the day we called. We were surprised to discover that Othello only just falls into the range of sizes the boots are made, his feet are a little over six inches wide and similarly long. It took a while to put the boots on his front feet and they make his feathers look very disreputable but there is an immediate change in his soundness over rough surfaces. Where he has been very lame for the last few weeks (his front soles have been a bit thin since he came to us but he had a sudden and fairly bad attack of white line disease a couple of weeks ago) he is now mostly sound. He's not perfect but it means we can start working again, which will give his feet a better chance to recover- it will also give me more opportunities to get him really listening to me at which point we can continue working with his hind feet...

Where most horses pull their pointy-nose grooming face if you find an itch, Othello just half sticks his tongue out and looks retarded. Maybe he is.

He is also capable of looking quite handsome when he puts his mind to it. He likes to combine this with doing something weird like licking the gate or trying to steal your trousers, just so you don't get the idea he's either practical or decorative.
