Yesterday the sun shone and Lou and I took Cash and Small out for a ride on the common together. It had been intensely cold and most places were frozen solid, but the sandy trails on the common are so dry that they remained sandy. This gave us an opportunity for a little canter up one of the nice cantering hills. This was the time that Cash remembered that he is actually three-quarters race horse and was determined to catch up with Small and ideally to overtake. We didn't really go that fast, but a bit like an old sports car, being small and close to the ground certainly gives an impression of speed.

As I got home it started snowing and I brought in a whole lot of firewood and settled in for an evening by the stove.

This morning there was a good 10cm of snow on the ground at home, a little less at the yard. I took a few photos...

Frozen beechwoods
It only takes a little snow to turn Hindhead into Narnia.

Snowy tree trunk tricolour
Tree-trunk tricolour.

Cash in the snow
Riding my pony in the school. Nothing like a properly white background to show up how horrible and green a pony's hocks are.

Cash in the snow 2
Little adorable pony.

Cash and small have a groom
I gave Cash some scratchies and he started grooming on Small, who reciprocated, resulting in maximum adorableness.

Zorro went out ( he's out in a little pen in a flat field most days now ) and found it quite stressful, so he came in quite quickly. He is looking fairly sound still, which makes me hopeful that we might be on the right track. I still suspect the problem is more likely to have been an injury than the arthritis but either way I'm happy with progress.

On Wednesday I start a new job, so I'll have to get myself back into early mornings. I'll miss all the pony time ( and I'm flipping glad I've had time to muck out while Zorro has been on box rest ) but it will be convenient to get paid...

He came in cleaner than he went out today, which was nice.

And that, in a nutshell, is the pleasure of ponies in snow: they come in cleaner than they went out!

I've been working with an old gray geezer, and there is nothing like a snowstorm to demonstrate how not-white gray horses are.

Small pony is looking very happy and quite proud of himself in his duties as schooling horse.

Snow = pretty. And Zorro being sound = good.

Hi Ben, Good luck with new job etc. Thanks for all siversand clinic reviews that you have done. Your photos are providing useful diary of my interesting balance challenges! Not long until another clinic. F and B focus is on grass, not me, so I have a bit of work to do on that front too. CS
