I can't believe it's already a year since my adventures in Texas. I'm still learning from the stuff I did there and that month really did change everything about the way I am around horses. I was hoping that it would put me in a place to be able to get the most from spending a bit of time at Silversand this year but after the tribulations with the lorry last year we just don't have the money to fly out there- it's a real shame as I'd love to see Phillip Nye teach and he doesn't do that very often but so it goes, we'll find ourselves some other fun things to do and places to go this year I'm sure.

I've been thinking a lot about how brilliant that time was, the brightness of the light, the willingness and generosity of those colts, the constant nervousness on my part every time I was getting on a new horse. It was absolutely the most exciting, terrifying and fascinating thing I could have chosen to do. I was reminded of it again today seeing this video from Pierre who was one of my fellow students on the course. There's some good stuff here, very influenced by how Martin works:

Funny how those defining moments can both seem to last forever, and also be over and behind us in a flash...

I have faith you will find your next defining moment when you are meant to.

I'm seeing a lot of working from a trained horse to communicate with the untrained/ green horses...not something I've ever actually done in person, but this may be the year for it...

It's great because when you've hit that point where your horse can do the job then you are improving your saddle horse while you train the young one. Of course, I would need to get things to a place where my saddle horse didn't want to bite chunks out of every horse they meet...

It's another place where a western saddle is really handy.

I can't imagine how scary that must have been to put yourself into that environment. I guess you didn't really have the option of saying 'ummm, I don't really fancy getting on that one'.

On the upside Martin was pretty generous about not putting me on the really bucky ones. He made a pretty sound estimate of what I could handle and then just kept pushing me to extend that as the month went on.
