We're in full thaw now, the snow largely gone leaving the odd dirty pile of slush at the sides of the road and shrinking and diminishing patches of white around the place. The grass and ferns around the garden are all as flat as if someone had run an iron over them, but there is grass again in the ponies' field ( and the ponies can be out again in their own field after it being too slippery for some time ) and then today, miracle of miracles, sunshine!
Consequently, we all rode our ponies this morning.
sleepsy_mouse rode out for a gentle hack on Small pony and I schooled Zorro. Considering it was only a few weeks since we last did any proper schooling we seemed to have lost a lot of it- he was still there but everything was a bit kind of washy and sluggish so we spent most of the session sharpening things up, working to get him a little further in front of my leg and re-connect with his feet. It wasn't a great session but it was really good to be back in the saddle again and I have an idea for some things I want to work on from now and I'm having some ideas about how I might work on them too. Small pony was, as ever, outstanding and
sleepsy_mouse came home over the moon.
Unfortunately I have a bit of a suspicion I'm headed for another cold, judging by my jitteriness and general unnecessarily anxious demeanor over the last day or so- there seem to be a few colds around that start out with those or with crazily vivid dreams. Either way I'm coughing and harrumphing a bit now and I wouldn't be surprised at all to find I wake up tomorrow encumbered with the ill.
On the upside, the Sky family movie channel has really come through this weekend - Kung Fu Panda last night ( which I have never seen before but was truly excellent ) and now it's just started Prince Caspian, which I've kind of been vaguely thinking I'd like to see at some point. Problem solved.

Date: 18 Jan 2010 05:12 (UTC)It is funny how much snow impacts all aspects of life isn't it? And so interesting to watch you go through this 'having snow as a novelty' thing when it is so much a part of my daily existence.
We've been in a thaw too the past few days (which means everything's going to ice up by late this week so we'll see what that does for outdoor riding) and we had sun today too, for the first time in weeks. But the snow is still very much there and I don't expect we'll be rid of it til mid-April or so.
I was actually quite pleased with how well my pony has hung on to what he knows despite weeks off. But then, he's largely that kind of pony, which is okay by me, for now. But I think there's also something to be said for a horse that continues to challenge you and help you grow.
Hooray for movies. What I said about Invention of Lying and Up still stands. Best movies I've seen in a long time.
