You shoulda brought a gun instead of a beer, mate.
Nah. I don't need one. I got a Donk.
Got a what?

This is Donk:

He's a 13 year old 16.something warmblood, allegedly papered and of good breeding but a former owner lost the papers. He belongs to our trimmer, Charlie, who has plenty of other horses at the moment, a messy divorce in progress and two teenage daughters so she's not been able to dedicate a whole lot of time to him and given that Small is currently still off work ( hopefully back to normal soon ) and that I'm trying to ride as many different horses as I can it seemed like we could help her out and have a nice horse to come and stay for a while.

He's a gentle character with some very classy paces and I think he will give me an opportunity to pretend I can ride a dressage horse. Charlie is thinking she may have to sell him, in which case some regular work would really help but may be that after he has stayed with us for a few months it will give her enough of a break financially that she can afford to keep him. Either way her horse gets plenty to do and hopefully comes back well behaved with a few more miles on the clock and we get to ride a charming pony for a while.

His name apparently derives from the noise he makes when he canters, which is quite like a donkey.

He arrived yesterday- Charlie rode him over as it's only a few miles from where her horses live to our yard. You may gather from the above picture ( and you certainly would if you saw the other ones I took yesterday ) that he spent rather a lot of time after he arrived whinneying. He is used to being out with another gelding and although he can see other horses the whole time from where he is, he's not accustomed to having his own paddock. He seemed better today so we're hoping he'll settle to it- if not we'll maybe have to rethink things and probably integrate him with the boys. That would probably be fine anyways, but he can apparently be a little punchy in the field sometimes and as Zorro also can be we'd prefer not to risk it if we can avoid it, particularly as his stay may be relatively short.

We did a little work with him today and [ profile] sleepsy_mouse rode him a bit. He's a really nice horse to be around, sensitive and willing. It will be a pleasure to get to know him a little better over the next few weeks.

A slightly more flattering portrait.

That sounds like a win win situation, and a nice looking horse. I look forward to hearing what you are doing with him.

Yay Donk!

Sounds like a good deal for everyone involved, including Donk.

He is! Hopefully we'll manage to get some pictures of him working over the next few days. I tried yesterday but my camera was flat...

I did indeed. Donk was an anxious boy that day but he is happier now and starting to settle in a bit.
