The spring weather has persisted rather well through the last week, giving us more opportunities for riding out over the weekend. It was a little calmer than last week on Zorro's part - we had a bit of a spooky moment on Saturday when a couple of riders came cantering up behind us and Zorro decided the best response was a bucking fit but today was pretty much calm the whole time. A lot of trotting as well, letting Small set the pace and then me modulating our pace so we could drop back and catch up. Of course, Small trots much faster than Zorro so it was good practice for
sleepsy_mouse in keeping him at a more gentle pace that we could keep up with. The sun shone, we did some other explorations on the common that I spent most of my teens mountain biking around ( and doesn't it look different from horseback! ) and things were pretty good.
This afternoon we had a couple of shops we needed to visit, one to sort out some new Cavallo hoof boots for Small - we got a replacement pair the same size as the ones he had before but now they don't fit, presumably the cut has changed, so we need a bigger pair. The other is to pick up some Magnesium supplement for cows because it costs about £25 per kilo for horses and about £7 for a 25 kilo bag if you're buying for cattle. Anyway, this took us on a long loop where we were able to discover that it's worth calling ahead to check that the shops you are visiting open on a Sunday.
The loop had a good conclusion, though, as we finished up with a lesson at Julian's place. Having been away for a few months with no money for lessons,
sleepsy_mouse was worried she would have lost a lot of her position but actually she was looking great. Julian had a whole lot of nice things to say about my riding as well- apparently hanging out with a bunch of cowboys has only improved my classical seat, which may well be something to do with spanish traditions in both or possibly just to do with Julian's spanish horse, who it's very hard to look bad on. Here he is, on the cover of this book, being ridden by Julian. Gorgeous horse.
