I've just ordered myself an Asus Aspire One netbook and accompanying USB hard drive from Amazon. Not outrageously expensive and may be very useful during future travels. Also for some reason the hard drive, which claims some degree of resilience, was priced at £49 for a 300gb version when everyone else was charging more for smaller drives. Potentially that is a win.

the harddrives have to do with the type of drive -- those bigger ones are regular drives. the smaller ones are flash/solid state drives that can be dropped and everything without loosing data. Just more sturdy. I got an HP mini with a 16 g solid state drive for xmas (from me, for me) but I can get more space if needed, but it's just for net use (hence, it's a 'netbook') so it works wonderfully :D

I want a hard drive because I want to be able to stow images while I'm away from home and have the chance to check them over and get rid of the rubbish ones - at most clinics I will fill my camera most days and much of it is motor-drive duplicates that I can safely bin. By getting a USB hard drive rather than an SSD I gain the extra storage and I can move it to my desktop machine much more easily than transferring things over the network so it should ideal for what I need.

Being able to write up clinic reports in the evenings as I go should save a lot of catching up in the weeks after I get back...

for photo downloads, definitely makes sense! when I travel for photography, I take the larger notebook and portable external harddrive. I need the larger one so I can process photos on-the-go for critiques and such, which the netbooks can't really do very well. good choice!

I think in a situation like this, you are obligated to provide a link to the exact doohicky that you bought so we can all go clicky clicky and drool over it with you.

It's just your regular Aspire One (http://www.acer.com/aspireone/) ( should be blue ) which came in as by far the cheapest system to pack with a 9" screen...
