Back from the clinic. It was amazing- these courses just get better and better. The only downside was that I got myself in the wrong place on Saturday and managed to get myself kicked. There are a lot of arguments in favour of barefoot horses, but in this case the one that really works for me is that I think had Zorro been shod my leg would have been broken. As it is I dropped like a stone, my right thigh was very rapidly double the size of my left one and we had to spend a few dull hours in Tunbridge Wells A&E.

I didn't allow it to stop me doing the rest of the clinic, but it feels like someone has stuck a plank under the skin of my leg and walking is hard work. Fortunately, it doesn't get in the way of riding but I had to change how I do groundwork- very much a change for the better in this case, but a hell of a way to make that transformation.

We have had to leave the horses where they were because I couldn't safely drive the lorry home- we'll go and collect them next weekend.

In spite of which I'm very happy with the things we got. Both Zorro and Small were absolutely stunning.

Disappointingly it hasn't even come up as a bruise, my thigh is just generally huge...

Thank you. I'm not doing so badly, apart from being unable to change the bend of my leg things are almost as normal.

More arnica needed, no doubt.

Ouch!

I saw a man get kicked right in the breastbone once. I don't think he swelled up though so I guess it probably wasn't as bad a kick as you had.

I learned this one the hard way when I got kicked in the nads by a horse when I was about 10. Again unshod though so you may be onto something there.

That is one way in which my horse is the perfect height- a little taller and it would have been my hip or my nads, a little lower and it would have been my knee. Either would have been a lot harder to survive without long-term injury.

I think I probably swelled up cos it was mostly muscle damage. If it had been somewhere bony I think it would have gone right through. If it had been my knee or hip I doubt I would be walking for a long time.

I caught up on lj so I'm not sure how I missed this.

What inspired the kick??

I had a plan and he had a plan and he was more interested in his than mine. I was working too close so he was able to catch me.
