Bad news for Dylan
27 May 2008 22:19This morning on the way to ponies ( who I visit before work ) I had to get out of the way of a lorry coming down the narrow single-track lane the yard is at the top of. When I went to pull out of the drive I had backed into my car stalled and stayed stalled. Turning the key turned the engine over but there was no hint that it was going to fire at all.
We are only a few weeks off MOT time and I have noticed that the back bumper has become slightly detached also- it's actually still pegged on to the bodywork, but the bodywork has come adrift from the other bodywork.
Anyways, it was quite unlucky, car not starting, car not even thinking about starting, but fortunately I was only a hundred yards or so down the hill from the yard and double fortunately our yard owner was still around and was quite happy to use one of his many tractors to tow me up the hill to the yard.
I'm at a point where I'm thinking it's probably the end of the road for Dylan ( the car ) - he's done 183000 miles by this point, which is a lot for a petrol car even if it is a Honda and he's been absolutely reliable for most of that time, but his value is tending strongly towards zero and unless this is a very easy fix (and the way he just stopped I suspect it probably isn't) I think it may be time to think about replacing him. Not sure what with but my driving habits favouring slow and steady over zippy and hurried I wouldn't be surprised if a small diesel appealed to me. I do like to be able to drive through puddles without worrying my car is going to inexplicably cease and they are usually enough more economical than petrol cars that even with the roaring cost of fuel they are no more expensive to run.
I would love to be able to cycle to work, but until we have ponies living in the garden or they and us and work are a lot closer together that's not really an option currently.
