We're just on the edge of the 10km Foot & Mouth observation zone here. Much too close for comfort, but not as close as initial reports suggested.

Really hoping that they get it locked down and contained where the outbreak was first noticed because if it spreads it's going to hit all the local producers we buy meat from. I mean it probably will anyway, one way or another, but we don't know that it's any of their herds currently.

Anyone else in the area here is the DEFRA map.

oh crap! i've always been terrified of foot&mouth. have no idea of what it really does, but it sounds awful. i remember watching a horrible BBC drama about it once years ago when i was a kid and it got in the water and ppl got it and yuck yuck yuck.

10km is not very far at all, so hopefully it gets under control ASAP.

It spreads and it's quite nasty, but not as awful as some rumours suggest, the main problem is that it spreads like wildfire and if you have Foot & Mouth in your livestock there are restrictions on where you can export it and what you can charge for it, so rather than use the vaccines, DEFRA choose to cull all affected animals.

...Holy shit, I really haven't been watching TV/reading the papers lately. What's this about Foot and Mouth? They haven't discovered it again have they?
