I'm reading the Lord of The Rings again, for the first time since seeing the films. It has really made me conscious of how much from the books they managed to fit into the films.

It's also reminded that what I want to do when I grow up is join the Rohirrim. Saxon cavalry for the win!

In New Zealand we went on a coach which was driven by someone who played one of the Riders in the films. She had to wear a false beard, apparently. Anyone from the Queenstown area who could ride a horse was told to grab a spear and go play.

We also saw (I think) the rock the warg jumped off.

Lou knows a few people online that did that as well. Once you know that most of the riders in the film were women the scenes with the Rohirrim become a lot more like the stoning scene from Life Of Brian...

It does lend a certain irony to the whole "Dernhelm" business.

Nah, cavalry are rubbish, the horses don't take their hits... </geekery>

Tanks are much more fun anyway.

Tanks don't really work in the setting though. Also, not having minds of their own they're a lot less entertaining. Possibly also safer, but entertainment is the important bit. And I'd feel pretty stupid talking to a tank, whereas I only feel a bit stupid talking to my horse.

Yeah, it's the mind's of their own that puts me off horses.
And the terrified nervousness of everything around them.
And the fact the have a tiny brain and ten times my strength.

Tanks just don't treat you to an unstoppable wild ride through the undergrowth if they see an unexpected pidgeon take off near their feet.

And I talk to my car already, wouldn't be much of a stretch to talk to my tank.
Can make it a steam-tank if it fits the genre better?

Well I figure it like this

Rohirrim are cool
Horses are evil
Rohirrim on elephants - big and clever
