Today at work has been normal so far except that I've lost my job. It's not my fault - we don't have enough work on for the company to stay solvent so they've decided to shut it down- it's been a good five years and I'm certainly at the top of my game as a programmer so I have plenty to fall back on, but I'll miss the place and the people, though I'm sure we'll stay in touch.

I am feeling a strange mix of melancholy and exhilaration. Everything life gives you is an opportunity of some kind- I guess I just have to work out how to make the most of this one.

Sorry to hear that dude
Good luck with the search - although I'm sure you'll be better off for it - it's normally how these things work out

That's quite shocking. Was there no build-up to that at all?

Take time to think your next move through, and I'm sure that you'll find something new and interesting. In fact, one might say you already have...

I knew we had hit a quiet patch, I didn't realise that the long-term position was so bad- we've been very busy all summer.

Still, consultancy apparently pays well and may give me a little more flexibility where time is concerned although I have to learn to deal with being self-employed and all the bastard stuff that goes along with that...

its not that bad, and my Dad's been earning far more and doing more interesting things since he started doing consultancy and now you can fill tax forms in online its less annoying

Boo and hiss to the loss of job!

Also, fear not. Now is the perfect time to go into partnership with two men called Stu (that's me and the evil one) and make horrible music on the odd occasion as a band called the Three Stus. It's like the Three Johns but not. See what I did there?

Woah.
So, is it like, 'don't come in on monday', or more like, 'we are ending your contract in January'?

Bad luck and good news. The old place was holding you back.

Thanks for that. I'll be in touch directly about moving the Flangebeast...

It's kind of like "we can just about afford to pay you for next month, then we're shutting the office and selling up.

To be fair they are doing the best they can to make it easy for us.

I was kind of thinking I could be earning more than I currently am, so I guess this is my opportunity one way or another...
