Iris got off a lorry at midday today and went out into her field.

She snorted a bit, looked at Cash and set about grazing.

Iris first day 1
Checking out Cash.

Iris first day 2
Checking out... something in the distance.

Iris first day 3
Cash is baffled- how could a mare ignore him?

At this point she was doing so well I thought I could head home and grab some lunch. Sure enough, when I got back she was anxiously pacing the fence and quite unsettled.

Iris first day 4
Trotting because I had asked her to change her ideas about pacing up and down getting flustered.

We did a bit of groundwork and I helped get her brain back into her head. She was very green, as one would expect, but she picked things up really fast. A pleasure to work with.

Iris first day 5
A little calmer after groundwork.

Iris first day 6
My horses.

I brought them in as I thought she could do with a chance to calm down and settle a bit- it did seem to help. Also it took her about ten seconds to figure out that I had gone off to make dinner and start getting excited about it. I think she is going to be a lot of fun to work with.

Turns out it was the cows in the next field that were bothering her. Now she's had another day to get used to them she's a lot calmer. I expect pretty soon they'll be no trouble. I'm kind of glad we didn't find out about that concern out on a ride.

She's a really nice horse. The more she settles the more it comes through.

She was better today than yesterday and will be better tomorrow than she was today, I'm sure. My main problem is likely to be her getting a bit herdbound to Cash.

Also possibly the other mare on the yard ever getting to meet her in person, apparently there is only one queen of the pastures.

I think so too. She's figuring out the things I'm asking for so fast, given what a new situation she is in.
