With my favourite [livejournal.com profile] herecirm over to visit, we took Cash out this morning with me riding and her as ground support crew and expedition photographer.

Helpful and friendly pony
Cash helps me sort out his bridle by whiffling my face.

Cash trotting
I think the new saddle allows him to open up his trot a little more.

Cash Trotting 2
He certainly seems to be going pretty nicely for where we're at riding-wise.

Shining Pony
Seriously, [livejournal.com profile] herecirm is an outstanding photographer.

Approaching water
Approaching the stream.

This water has a flavour!
When crossing a stream, it's important to taste it just in case it is delicious.

Cash on track
Heading up the track.

The noble steed
The noble steed.

And... pose
Basically if we have an expedition photographer with us, we'll probably just pose the whole flippin' time.

Back on track
And then have to trot to catch up.

A pony descends
This gives an idea of how steep the path we're going down is- normally if I'm taking pictures from horseback it kind of flattens it, but it genuinely is quite steep.

Pony sticks his tongue out
:p

Such a cute pony!

It's surprisingly hard to get a picture of him where he hasn't either got his tongue out or his eyes shut...

Such very nice shots! He really is moving out nice and freely, just where you want him to be at this point in his training. And he looks happy and comfortable. A very good thing.

Thank you! I'm so pleased with him. He's so easy to work with because he so much wants to get things right. I'm so used to "make me" from Zorro that I am constantly having to remember to turn everything down with the little guy.

Cash looks and sounds like the sort of horse that Gregg would classify as "having discipline with a good mind." That is, he sticks to his training, he remembers it, he has a good work ethic and he wants to please. He so clearly looks like a happy, willing boy who wants to please and enjoys his work...but sensitive as well. A nice combo, as long as you don't overface him...which you won't, not your style.

Thing is, for performance, you also want a touch of that Zorro attitude as well, because the tough-minded ones (if performance-oriented and not lazy and seeking to avoid work) will dig down deep inside to come up with the edge you need, when you need it. Mocha has that bit (though she's also very much a Cash type as well), and when her tough side comes out, hoo boy....that said, that look of eagles in her eyes when she put it all together at the horse show a year ago was priceless. Especially after my childhood mare who absolutely hated showing to the degree that she would slouch if I wasn't right on her. Sparkle and Zorro would have gotten along right well, very similar minds.

I don't know that I'd be in a place to take him to any great height anyways. If I can get transport I might see if we could maybe get to a small beginners type show some time next year just to find how we get on really...

You might be surprised...at the very least the seasoning would be good for him.

What a star! He's one of those ponies with natural presence...

If I put tinsel in his mane he could have Christmas presence.

Groan... A gold pony with a twinkly mane? Go on, I dare you.

Double dog dare! Pretty gold ponies need twinkles! Especially for Christmas. He'd probably like it, too...all LOOK AT MEZ, PLZ, I IS PURTY.

He possibly would. Or it might represent change, which is directly proportional to the end of the world. Fortunately the world tends to only end fairly briefly and then things are alright again...

Love that first photo--the first three actually--and well, generally they're all very good photos to tell the truth. And I love that he is holding his body in such an easy comfortable way in every single shot. No tension in that horse caused by the rider! (Now let's hope my horse looks that way some day!)

He seems comfortable with me and more comfortable with this saddle ( or maybe it insulates him from me better and vice versa so I don't feel every twitch of tension now, which can still be a help for the horse ) so it's going pretty well really. I am so pleased with the progress the little fellow is making.
