Friday before last, Small pony had a bit of colic and we had to call the vet out. With pain relief he was fine but it was a scary moment. Then on Monday he was ill again. During the week he seemed brighter, but on Sunday morning he was off again. After a day and night with only a bran mash for dinner and breakfast he went out this morning. I checked in on my way to work and he was starting another attack.
After four callouts it was pretty clear this is not a regular seasonal colic and we decided with the vet ( by this point Small is friends with pretty much every vet on the practice ) to take him in to the Equine Hospital and get him checked out in more detail. A Peritoneal tap showed nothing, but ultrasound indicated some thickening of the intestinal wall and some kind of possible blockage in the small intestine.
This evening he was uncomfortable again and not responding to pain relief. As I write he is going into surgery.
If you have any good thoughts to spare, please send them his way. He is the most adorable pony ever and he needs all the help he can get right now.
