Well the weekend was pretty awesome fun - Saturday was [livejournal.com profile] nohotashes stag night so I dashed off to Reading after work, collected [livejournal.com profile] shanks01 and [livejournal.com profile] ramalam and we meandered out to Wales, arriving at Gwyn and Lucy's house late enough to find it largely full of people who had arrived before us. We sat around and drank a little wine chatting about our plans for the following day and the terrible things we were going to do to Gwyn as part of the stag night ( at the worst he was going to have his hands cut off, get glasses and a moustache drawn on with permanent marker then tatooed over and also "I love luke" tatooed on his butt ) along with discovering that one person wasn't going to make it back.

There were ( I think ) five of us sleeping in the living room that night. And by "sleeping" I mean "listening to Shanks and Jackson chattering until quite early in the morning."

Saturday began early as we needed to get on a minibus and go over to the activity place where we were to spend the day. The morning activities started with paintball, which was kind of lame because the games were all more or less pointless and the "arena" was small and didn't offer many strategic options, while also encouraging point-blank shooting. By the end of that one member of the group had a finger strapped up and a lot of other people had bruises. I was lucky enough to miss out on that.

Then there was some climbing, which involved a climbing wall, some rope climbing and a zip slide thingummibob. This was the only part where my cold really kicked in - I got half way up the easier side of the climbing wall and just ran out of air and had to quit and head back down. That sucked a bit, but pretty much everyone else got up it just fine. The pattern was clearly that the person who went up first didn't do so well but everyone else did fine. Gwyn's dad was awesome at climbing. I didn't try the rope climbs or the slide because I just didn't have any faith I'd be strong enough to get up there.

The last activity of the day was quad biking, something I proved to be inexplicably terrible at. I don't know what that was about, but I found it hard to steer ( they were mini-ones and my knees got in the way ) and kept overdoing it and finding myself inexplicably stuck on sides of the track. By the end I was maybe going around as fast as everyone else was at the start but I really was pretty poor at it.

We headed back to Gwyns ouse to find that Lucy had snuck in and laid out a fantastic buffet and then vanished again, so we ate like a large group of greedy boys and then tarted ourselves out and went off to a casino for an evening of crazy gambling.

I had never been to acasino before, but I had a good evening. It's a great pleasure watching Shanks gamble because he is so utterly bad at it, he adopts the high risk and high payoff types of bet that almost invariably come out badly. I would say that in this he is probably the best friend the house could wish for. Seeing everyone's different strategies was interesting too - who played the long bets who played things more safe, who put a lot of money down and who didn't. I put a tenner down at the start of the evening and managed to make it last all night, coming out slightly up, but I probably am the most boring gambler imaginable- small margins and small wins.

Funnily enough although we retired to a bar after a while we actually didn't drink nearly so much that night and we were so tired after Friday's entertainments that it was a relatively early night.

We managed to sleep quite late on Sunday - a thermarest on a wood floor is not a soft bed but I was pretty much exhausted - and after a tasty breakfast and more morning chat we returned to my rusty justy ( now apparently named Rusty Justice ) and headed back to Merrie Englande. Half way back I had a couple of very funny turns, that scared the hell out of me, never mind my passengers. They both passed, and we got back alright after a while. Still no idea what it was but I honestly thought I was going to just pass out for a few moments. Apparently Gwyn actually did pass out after we left, but he was feeling pretty sick as well and I just had these sudden moments so I don't know if there was any connection at all there.

In spite of that - and the amount I did over the weekend almost certainly setting my recovery from whatever illness has been bothering me - it was a really good weekend and I enjoyed myself a lot. There were a lot of people who it is always a pleasure to see and my muscles ache from laughing as much as from any of our exertions. Good times!

I think, should an outing of this nature (minus the stag thing) ever happen again, that I will attend in an ABC suit. Good grief.

What on earth is quad biking?

It involves quad-bikes. I think maybe in the US they're termed ATVs?

You'll attend in a romper suit like the rest of us.

Gotta play big to win big!

Sadly, in this instance, I played big to lose, not big, but enough that people seemed to THINK it was big.

Man roulette (?!) is my weakness though. DAMNED YOU BLACK 22 AND BLACK 17! (And, Im sure, black 15!)

They just call it a long bet for a reason. I think you need to have a larger starting point if you're going to bet on single numbers so you can maybe make it back just by attrition. If you bet 30 times on 36:1 odds, you'd have a pretty good chance of coming in ahead, but if you've only got 20 chips to start with, then that bet gets a lot more risky...

Was good. Sad you couldn't come but at least you'll be around for the wedding, right?

Yeah, that one's not in doubt. Current plan is to head on down to Cardiff on the Saturday morning. I was going to phone you about that at some point and find out when you're heading West, too. People meeting up and doing Stuff the day before would be a good plan, I feel?
