It has been a long day- we had to get to the studio for 10 this morning to record guide tracks (guitar, bass, vocals and a click) that could be used as a basis for the drum track recording. I find it really hard to play with a click track because it's ruthless accuracy exposes the more out of time aspects of my style- I suspect that trying to keep in time with the click actually makes me play worse because I can't relax so much and then I end up following the beat rather than uniting with it. In the end we got six guides recorded before lunch and in the afternoon Mic, our drummer, was as able to record his drum parts. It was important to get them done now because he gets married next weekend and will then be away for a good few weeks. With his part done the rest of us can work through that time.

Because of the line-up we used for the guides Charlie, our piano player, would have been a little redundant at today's session had he not brought a frisbee, which the we spent most of the afternoon throwing around while Mic did his job. That pretty much wore us out and kept us out of the way for a good few hours, probably the best possible outcome for Mic and our engineer, Rob.

On Wednesday I go back after work with the slightly ambitious hope that I will get my bass parts recorded that evening. It shouldn't be too hard, as long as I can play in a moderately competent fashion, but I have a strong suspicion that competent and I are not really on speaking terms, now or ever.
