This evening finds me much afflicted with the melancholy vapours, so I'll endeavour to cheer everyone up by sharing some pictures that I took over the last couple of weeks.

The local ponies have been joined in their duties grazing the valley by highland cows.

A bumblebee around foxgloves in the woods. You would think with all the foxgloves around here, our local fox wouldn't need to come into the porch and steal human gloves...

Elderflowers, from which a cordial that tastes like summer can be made.

Zorro rampaging down the hill upon noticing that I'm moving the fence to give a bit more grazing at the bottom of the field.

Last Sunday I went out to the top of the highest west-facing hill in the area to get some sunset pictures.

Scots pines in silhoette.

Bracken against the sun.

Of course, a high heathland hilltop leaves very little in the way of useful foreground. I thought perhaps a noble portrait of yours truly in silhoette would work, but I didn't have my tripod with me, couldn't work out where the camera was pointing and ended up just taking a noble portrait of my left knee in silhoette.

The last of the light.

The walk home through the valley in twighlight was enjoyable, except for the really steep, dark climb through an eerie, pathless forest of dense holly.

Highland Cattle!

My husband came home from a bike ride proclaiming there were hairy volkswagens with horns on the trip. It took several times accompanying him to locate the creatures and there they were - just like that one. Plus babies.

Sigh. I am sad that the solstice has come and gone. I swear I can already tell the days are getting shorter. But that's probably partly illusion related to the fact we've finally had some rain and the associated clouds... this time of year, the sun actually doesn't set completely for another week or so.

There are loads of bumblebees around at the moment. They are a true bee, so they do sting, but they are gentle creatures and I don't know of anyone who has actually been stung by one.

Elderflowers are the flower of the Elder tree, elderberries are the fruit, so in a few months those flowers will be rich dark berries with almost exactly no flavour whatsoever but much vitamin c.

I was wandering back from the hilltop where I took those photos, listening to the rabbits scampering about and thinking of Hazel and Fiver.

Small tucks his hindfeet under himself and canters carefully down the hills, Zorro does something a little like an avalanche.

Oh noes. :( *runs in with a hoover to extract the melancholy vapours*

Fantastic photos, I want a Highland cow and a rampaging Zorro too. If whenever I happen to find myself down South next, shall I take a noble portrait of you standing nobly against a noble sunset? Being noble?

Well, I don't know how well that would work- I don't necessarily silhoette very well because my nose tends to obscure the entire frame. You could chase a cow up to the top of the hill for me so that could be foreground though. If nothing else it would be hilarious to watch you try to chase a cow up a steep hill.

I personally think it would be hilarious to watch a cow chase you down a steep hill.

Cows can pick up quite a lot of momentum on a hillside. It would make a memorable foreground though and one is supposed to suffer for one's art.
