Losing time
15 March 2009 00:22Today was interesting- we began by riding the ponies out on the common, it was a bit blustery and after meeting a couple of slightly jumpy horses going the other way Zorro was kind of primed to spook a little himself. I was aware of this but not aware enough because suddenly on a comfortable and open bit of path we were springing forward into full speed and bucking. It was a complete surprise to me because I hadn't seen or heard the jogger behind us any more than Zorro had, but I reacted more or less right, got him stopped, but as that happened found that he was more beside me than underneath me by this point and so made a gentle and graceful ass-first thump on the ground. As seems to happen,
sleepsy_mouse heard the swearing and looked round in time to see me hit the dirt. The jogger was mortified- he'd been trying to make plenty of noise so we could hear him but obviously neither of us had.
Fortunately we really were stopped by the time I fell off, so it wasn't really bruising, just embarrassing. After that we had a few more leaps but I was expecting it to happen again and it was no problem at all. He was just a bit anxious I guess, but it was a little bit pesky.
In the afternoon we went off to a tack shop to buy new boots for Small and on the way back we managed to get caught up in a traffic jam from a nasty accident. There were many police, fire engines and ambulances- even the air ambulance came in and landed on the other carriageway. Given that we were only about ten minutes drive from the nearest Accident and Emergency unit that was probably very bad news. It was an impressive bit of flying bringing the helicopter in on the road.
One of those times when any annoyance about the two hours waiting on the road was tempered by relief that we weren't driving that way thirty seconds earlier...

Date: 15 Mar 2009 01:03 (UTC)I've developed a habit of reminding myself, when I get stuck in traffic, that chances are that up ahead, someone is having a far worse day than me. Not that I want them to be having a bad day--I'd much rather we all be driving merrily along! But it does make it easier for me to not get vexed about a little delay.
