When we went to see The Golden Compass I said:
Rather than trying the impossible task of watering down the sequels they should totally just do a "Lee Scoresby's Aeronautical Adventures" type prequel.
Today Amazon notified me about a new book being published next month:
Once Upon a Time in the North is a forthcoming fantasy short story by Phillip Pullman. It is a prequel to Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and will be published on April 3, 2008 in the United Kingdom. The premise of the story involves the meeting of Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby.
Winner!

Also Lee Scoresby, probably my favourite character in the books by a narrow margin and in the film by a huge one.

I doubt they'll make films of the second and third books. You can't avoid the fact that their core plot is that of a war against the church and I don't think that the snivelling wretches running the studios will be brave enough to make films about that.

The books are, quite literally, brilliant and your life will be richer for having read them, so I definitely condone them.
