Eigg is in the news - and in a good way. It was a regular family holiday destination when I was small and we last visited a couple of summers ago, so I have a slight connection with the place. Since the islanders finally managed to buy their way out of feudal rule ( and the control of an asset-stripping german fraudster ) about ten years ago the island has gone from strength to strength. Having regular electricity will make a really big difference there.

That's a really neat story. I can just imagine how excited all those people are to get electricity. I think it's really neat that the residents actually own the island. Not that there is much of a government with 87 people, but I bet it's a lot more efficient than many places.

It has to be really cos - particularly at this time of the year - it can be quite cut off from the mainland. Better since they got the new jetty but i don't know whether the boats can always get in even then.

I used to spend several weeks in the summer on a small island kind of like this. It's in Michigan, toward the Upper Peninsula out in Lake Michigan, called Beaver Island. It's actually a small Irish fishing village, or all things. Yes, Irish. The permanent residents were all Irish natives. Of course, it's all posh now that rich people have discovered that it's a nice place to get away to, but I remember it fondly as the place with no tv, very few cars, and I could walk everywhere without a care in the world.
