I think I made no secret of the fact that First Love by Emmy The Great was my favourite album of last year and indeed one of my favourite albums ever. I mention this again because a) it hasn't stopped being brilliant so if you forgot to listen to it for some reason you really need to fix that and b) she's using a site called Pledgemusic to enable fans to make pledges towards the recording of the album. I know the pledge idea has been around for a while ( if I recall correctly it's how Serenity got made ) but I think it's a particularly good fit for independent musicians who want to maintain that independence as far as possible. The music industry is, by and large, a nasty place and as the technology to record well becomes more available, the opportunities for musicians to bypass some of it's more unpleasant corners increase, which I can only see as good news.

I've given a pledge because I like the idea and because there is no finer songwriter in the English language right now. I really hope this is an approach that can help other acts out in future as well - it strikes me as a really good one.
