On the hoof
5 April 2009 22:12On Friday I sat on Zorro, somewhat gingerly, to decide whether my muscles had healed up enough that I would be able to ride in a lesson today and I figured that they probably had. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and advice on how to move forward with that- I have a much clearer strategy in mind now.
So on Saturday I walked to the yard, just to see how long it took ( about 40 minutes, including an unnecessary long-cut to explore a new path ) and then
sleepsy_mouse's parents came over and met us at the yard and after a tasty lunch we all went out for a walk together with her riding on Small. It was a very pleasant spring day, bright and sunny and everything in blossom and flower and it made for an enjoyable walk. Small did find it a little dull to be stuck at slow human speeds but they got to charge off into the distance from time to time and ultimately I think he had fun.
Today I was surprised to find I was a little stiff from yesterdays endeavours. Evidently I need to think more about fitness.
sleepsy_mouse rode out again in the morning while I tidied up the field a bit and got started on this year's crusade against Ragwort in the field. Unfortunately the amount of it just outside the field makes it an unlikely fight to win, but I'll keep digging it up in spare moments and hopefully at least keep it at bay. When she got back we headed out to Brighton to visit some shops- Brighton is a funny place, the town itself reminds me of Swansea, a place I still miss ( or at least I miss the times I had there and I always enjoy visiting ) but the shopping in the hippy corner we were in is basically like a little corner of Glastonbury. The sandalwood joss-stick smell of hippy shops every where brought back happy memories of when I was small.
We headed back over the downs for a lesson with Julian. We're still on the lunge, we're still in walk and trot, but it feels like we're both starting to get it now. Here is how I was looking today:

I had been riding with my eyes shut, apparently Carel decided to join in.
I'm glad to be back in the saddle, when I pulled that muscle I was worried that I might be out of action for a while and being able to ride again is very encouraging...
