That notorious mark
7 October 2006 23:25Today we went to visit the very charming Kerin, owner of the elegant black horse from my clinic report a couple of posts back so she could try Lou's saddle on her big chonking horse Zorro. After an inordinately long (and totally unnecessary) drive through Tunbridge Wells and it's many and varied traffic jams we got to their very lovely yard and met assorted horses and some very cheerful dogs, one of whom was so pleased to meet new friends that she was quite prepared to jump up to head height in order to lick our faces.
Zorro himself is a very charming beast, a bit like Othello but a little bigger and with a lot more muscle. He also shares Othello's ignorance of personal space and ability to treat his shoulder as a battering ram. In spite of that he exudes a cheerfully curmudgeonly charisma and demands your attention. He also demands the right to kill mounting blocks, so it's best that not all his demands are met. The saddle seemed to be comfortable for Zorro and Kerin and he looked very dashing trotting around the school with his thunderous hoofbeats and mane flowing in the wind. When he gets strong and big Othello will be like that too, no doubt.
I actually got on very well with Zorro too, we did a little bit of groundwork together and I spent a while untangling his mane while we were all chatting about saddles and angry cobs after he had been ridden. He seemed to find my company quite relaxing, which was really nice, and he was ready to lead beautifully softly with me. He didn't even try to club me into unconsciousness with his head after the first couple of attempts.
It was lovely to see Kerin and Lottie again and it made for a really happy day. The only downside (apart from that confounded traffic jam) was thinking what great weather everyone must be having at Candlestone and how fun it would be to be there hanging out with all my larping buddies and confronting peril at every turn.
