Autumn seeps around summer's corners

This evening I drove home in dark and the rain and for the first time since summer began I had the heater on. Probably because I lived in the woods for most of my childhood I am strongly affected by the seasons and the slow transition from summer to autumn has a kind of gentle melancholy to it that I find very appealing. It is a good time to listen to Nick Drake albums and to think back across the summer and across all the summers that have happened before.

The end of the summer has always been the brief calm before september comes and everything changes - through school and college to university and as far as my first job, autumn was always the time of change. This year it is our wedding that is now rushing in and even though it is just a legally binding declaration of the love that holds us together it still feels like a brilliant and exciting start.
