Well, another weekend ended pretty quick then. But fine weather and autumn colours can only mean one thing...

This was a couple of days ago- the sky was very dramatic and after some time persuading him not to eat my camera Small posed nicely, before going back to trying to eat my camera.
Yesterday Zorro and I went out for a medium-sized hack on the common - he was quite jumpy so it wasn't a speedy rampage, more a keeping-the-brain-in-the-head wander that ended up using quite a few schooling exercises on the trail. He was good though, all in all. And then who should we meet on the way back but these two:

What is this animal? It is the Donk animal!
sleepsy_mouse had taken him out down the lane to see how he got on riding out solo with her ( he was great ) and with the plan of meeting up on the trail to help make it a positive experience for him. I'm not always sure how much Zorro helps with that, but they walked back to the yard together very happily. Apart from when there was a squirrel and Zorro nearly spooked straight into the back of Donk.
Last night we went off to Wells for an old friend's wedding, which was great and involved seeing many fine people we see too seldom. But also we were late and missed the food. Good job they had cheese rather than wedding cake really.
This morning we went out to Waggoners Wells, a valley with three artificial lakes in it that is a place people go to fish, to be ducks and to enjoy the colours in the beech trees as autumn comes in to full swing:

(I now realise that this is basically the same as the previous one, but better )

I think by next weekend the beeches will be almost all yellow and russet. After that the leaves will be gone.

Looking up one of the lakes. The sky is a bit washed out, probably because I was running on my default "taking pictures of/from horses" setting.
From there we headed on to the ponies. Small is feeling a bit brighter at the moment ( but his bloods still aren't right and we can't be sure he won't relapse ) so he came out for a little wander to the stream at the bottom of the valley...

After that Zorro and I went out for another adventure, this time going down to the stream and then up the other side and around the woods to the Devil's Punchbowl.

Chestnut and bracken are both turning beautifully at the moment and with the light behind them it was a fantastic time to be riding.

The view over Zorro's ears!

Zorro was really anxious about this little guy- he didn't play up at all, just stared intently, but I could feel his heart absolutely thumping. Pony was not in the least bit interested or concerned about Zorro.
We went down the valley and past a couple more ponies, which Zorro was fine with, but then when one called from the top of the valley behind us ( probably the guy in the photo ) he got very anxious, putting in a buck that would have been very hard to sit if we hadn't been going uphill and wanting to leave. The tricky part was dealing with the gate about twenty metres further on because Zorro was really needing to move his feet and that makes for some tricky gate uncatching. We got it though and after a bit more anxiety on the other side of it he came back to me really nicely and we went on...
We do have our moments still, both today and during some anxious moments yesterday, but they have a different texture to them now if that is the word. They are just small, passing things that happen and then are gone. Although I don't think they are different for Zorro, I don't get caught up in them or worry too much about them and so after something has bothered him I don't go and make matters worse. I think he really appreciates that.

Looking up the valley towards our house.

The last climb- more of that fading bracken.
All in all, a pretty awesome weekend. As usual the photos are bigger over on my Flickr.
