I just ( literally just this minute ) completed On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness: Episode 1, the first part of the game from the Penny Arcade team and I have to say it was great. If you can imagine a Final Fantasy game set in a gothic 1920s type setting that borrows heavily from Lovecraft packed with some excellent gags and the kind of over the top baroque dialogue that makes Jerry Holkins one of the people I most enjoy reading. It is somewhat in the spirit of classic lucasarts adventures too, although considerably more sweary.
The combat is occasionally lacklustre - the turn-based-ish combat system is simple but allows you some degree of strategy and some of the fights are quite tough but after a while you start wondering how many times you really need to fight the same enemies in the same configuration. Goodness knows how many hobos I offed during our tour of Hobo alley. Nonetheless it was worth it the moment I got to the next bit of dialogue or exposition.
That aside, the game was great fun, the script was tremendous and it didn't rely too strongly on the Penny Arcade connections so even if you don't care for the comic strip you could still enjoy the entertaining mayhem the game presents. I really enjoy good storytelling, which is one of the reasons I gave up on WoW and this game has it in droves. Well worth playing.
