A couple of updates

glenatronCar may not be as bad as the garage said, the fellow we bought it off has taken it away to have a look and will fix it at cost if possible. Good news.
Mark Rashid is pretty awesome. He does some clever things involving people and horses that are fascinating to watch, also some pretty simple things that make a lot of sense and one or two things that indicate a degree of perception and subtlety on the part of horses that is literally inexplicable. I don't mean that in a "woo, horses, they're pretty subtle" kind of way, I mean it in an "I honestly don't know how these things could be possible at all" kind of a way. With one thing I asked Mark about how it worked. He answered with "I don't know, it just does." I rather like that as an answer.
